Description

This bookmark is a useful resource for parents, carers and educators to use during shared book reading with children of all ages. It aims to engage children while developing their vocabulary, comprehension, predicting and inferencing skills.

The bookmark clearly sets out levels of questions for the child and gives you clear examples of the type of questions to ask to ensure they stay engaged in book sharing and learning.

We don’t want book sharing to be like a pop quiz for your child so try to keep the questions balanced with comments and your own thoughts too.

What is Blank's Levels of Questioning?

Parents, carers and educators use questioning to communicate with children and young people every day. It is crucial that children learn to understand the questions that they are being asked as well as how to respond to these questions.

Blank's Levels of Questioning are a framework developed by Developmental Psychologist, Dr Marion Blank, to help children to develop important language comprehension skills. The framework contains four key stages of questioning, each stage becoming more complex.

What are the four levels of questioning?
Level 1 – Naming things

Level 2 – Describing things (who, what, where)

Level 3 – Retelling

Level 4 – Predicting and problem solving

This resource is available as a printable PDF.
